Why it matters

Thane and Mumbai's western suburbs are a few kilometres apart in a straight line, but the national park sits between them. Every trip today goes around it: north over the Ghodbunder ghat or south through the city. The tunnel goes straight under the park, putting Borivali, Kandivali and the Western Express Highway within easy reach of Thane West for the first time.

Who gains most

  • Homes near the Manpada portal: the shortest distance to the tunnel mouth means the full time saving.
  • Western-suburb families: Thane's larger homes come within a short drive of work and family in Borivali or Malad.
  • Ghodbunder Road commuters: through traffic diverted from the ghat should ease the road.
